函館市旧イギリス領事館（開港記念館）

港町函館に揺れるユニオンジャックの歴史。

函館市旧イギリス領事館は函館が国際貿易港として開港した1859年（安政6）年から75年間、 ユニオンジャックをかかげ続け、異国情緒あふれる港町函館を彩ってきました。

数回の火災にあったのちこの場所に再建しましたが、再び火災により焼失し、 現在の建物は1913（大正2）年、イギリス政府工務省上海工事局の設計によって竣工し、 1934（昭和9）年に閉鎖されるまで領事館として使用されていました。

1979（昭和54）年に函館市の有形文化財に指定され、1992（平成4）年の市制施行70周年を記念して復元し、 この年から開港記念館として一般公開をしてきました。

2009（平成21）年3月、開港150周年を機に展示内容を一新し、 開港都市のシンボルとして新たな歩みを始めました。.

旧イギリス領事館(開港記念館)

函館にイギリス領事館が置かれたのは、安政6年(1859年)日本最初の貿易港として開港した時のことで、 函館ではアメリカ、ロシアに次いで3番目の領事館として、初代領事ホジソンが称名寺に開設しました。 文久3年(1863年)に現在の元町のハリストス正教会の西隣に領事館を新築しましたが、数度の火災にあい、 この建物は、イギリス政府工務省上海工事局の設計により、大正2年(1913年)に竣工したものであり、 昭和9年(1934年)の閉鎖まで領事館として使用されていました。 平成4年(1992年)8月からは、開港記念ホール、開港の歴史を伝える展示室、 旧外国公館の雰囲気の中で食事や各種ティーを楽しめるレストラン・喫茶室などを設け、一般公開をしております。

OLD BRITISH CONSULATE (OPENING-PORT MEMORIAL HALL)

The British Consulate was established in Hakodate in 1859 when the port of Hakodate was opened as the first Japanese port open to trade. This was the 3rd consulate in Hakodate, following the American and the Russian Consulates. The first consul, Mr. Hodgson, established it in the Shomyoji Temple. In 1863, a new building was constructed to serve as the consulate at the present site in Motomachi, on the west side of the Russian Orthodox Church. However, it caught fire several times. Construction of the present building, designed by the Shanghai Construction Bureau. Department of Engineering of the British Government, was completed in 1913. It was used as a consulate until the consulate was closed in 1934. In August 1992, the building was renovated to include a Main Hall, an exhibition room with information about the history of the port opening, and a restaurant and a tea room in which people can enjoy meals and a variety of teas in the atmosphere of old foreign consulates, and the entire building was opened to the public.
