旧函館区公会堂は、明治４２年５月に起工し、翌４３年９月に竣工した洋風の建物です。
明治４０年８月の大火により、住民の集会所であった町会所が焼失したため、
住民有志により「公会堂建設協議会」が結成され、
当時の豪商相馬哲平氏からの５万円の寄附をもとにして約５万８千円をもって建築されたもので、
設計は当時の函館区技手小西朝次郎、監督は函館区技手渋谷源吉、請負は村木甚三郎の手によるものでした。
この建物は、本館と附属棟からなり、本館は木造２階建の左右対称形で２階にはベランダを配しているほか、
屋根窓を置き、玄関・左右入口および２階ベランダの柱頭部には柱頭飾りがあるなど
特徴的な様式を表しており、その建築意匠・技法などが高く評価され、
本館は昭和４９年５月に、附属棟は昭和５５年１２月に国の重要文化財に指定されました。
旧函館区公会堂は、明治４４年８月、皇太子殿下(大正天皇)の行啓の宿舎として、
また、大正１１年７月には摂政宮殿下(昭和天皇)の御来道にも使用された由緒深い建物であり、
昭和３２年からは函館市公会堂として使用されてきましたが、
昭和５５年度から３カ年の保存修理工事を経て往時の姿を再現し、
現在は、コンサートホールとして広く市民に親しまれております。
Old Public Hall of Hakodate ward is a western style building. Construction started in May 1909, and was completed in September 1910.
The hall consists of a main building and an annex. The main building is made of wood, and has twostoreys. It is designed symmetrically with an upstairs veranda and skylights. The columns of the centre gate, both side entrances, and the second storey veranda are all distinctively carved in the same pattern.
Because of the main building's unusual architectural designs, it was designated as an important Cultural Property in May 1974. The annex was similarly designated in December 1980.
